Reawakening!

Time to order luminarias!

After almost a year of hibernation, the Newman Park Neighborhood Association is reawakening. 

A General Meeting was held at the Friesenhahn home on November 15 and new board members were elected: Lynn Coyle (NPNA's founding President), Orlando Arriola, Andy Baca, Becky Friesenhahn, Robert Taylor and Jim Tolbert. 

This past Tuesday the new Board met at the Tolbert home and officers for 2015 were elected: Andy Baca (Secretary), Robert Taylor (Treasurer), Becky Friesenhahn (Vice-President) and Jim Tolbert (President). 

The Board made plans for the annual luminarias fundraiser. Expect a sales flyer soon at your front door. Along with the information about the fundraiser, the flyer will ask for donations from members of the Newman Park Neighborhood Association. Who is a member? President Jim Tolbert said that all people in the Association boundaries should be considered members. There is no membership fee. Instead, there is a suggested donation of $20 per household. But less is okay and certainly more will be appreciated. So give what you can.

Of course, donations can be made online at any time. Just go to www.newmanpark.blogspot.com and click on the yellow donate button.

It's that time again to order luminarias. Get those orders in before December 22nd. The order form is below and gives instructions for ordering your beautiful 2013 Christmas Holiday Luminarias from your Newman Park Neighborhood Association. You do not have to be a member of NPNA or even live in that neighborhood.

Newmanistas Celebrate Christmas

Celebrating Christmas just comes naturally for Newmanistas. Starting with a Christmas party and caroling, they then gathered to assemble and deliver luminarias.


Last Wednesday, December 21st, many Newman Park neighborhood folk got together at the home of Becky and Michael Friesenhahn for hot chocolate, cookies, Santa and storytelling. Afterwards they went from house to house caroling.

Eddie Holland accompanies caroling practice on his flute. Association Ex-President, Lynn Coyle, conducted the Newmanista troubadours, the envy of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Santa arrives! Many thought that Santa was a dead-ringer for NPNA Treasurer, Robert Taylor.

On Saturday, Christmas Eve morning, Newmanistas gathered to assemble and then deliver luminarias. The day before, nearly 3 inches of snow fell in the El Paso area. With light snow and rain on the 24th, some families elected to light luminarias on Christmas Day.

This year you can use our handy PayPal button in the upper right hand column of this blog to place your orders. The flyer below gives added instructions. You can even print it out and use it to make your order. Note: All orders must be done by December 18th. Luminarias will be delivered to your home on Christmas Eve. Contributions for luminarias at Newman Park and the Mayfield Wildscape are welcome.

2009 Luminarias Sale a Huge Success

On Christmas Eve 25 homes plus Newman Park and the Mayfield Wildscape were lit by luminarias from the Newman Park Neighborhood Association. This year the Association made and distributed its own luminarias. After paying expenses, the Association made nearly $580 which will help fund neighborhood programs in 2010.

Members of the Association folded sacks, filled them with sand, added candles, distributed the orders, lit the luminarias at the park and wildscape, and did the cleaning-up. Almost 30 neighborhood volunteers made this year's Christmas project possible.

A big thank you goes to Kathleen Harmon who guided the group from planning through distribution. "We just couldn't have done this on our own without her," said Luminarias Chairman, Jim Tolbert.
